- Gather the necessary supplies: You’ll need a pet-specific ear cleaning solution (available at pet stores or from your veterinarian), cotton balls or gauze pads, and treats or rewards for your pet.
- Find a quiet and well-lit area: Choose a calm and comfortable space to access your pet’s ears easily. Make sure there are no distractions that could startle or stress your pet.
- Calm your pet: Before starting the ear cleaning process, spend a few moments reassuring and calming your pet. Offer treats or engage them in gentle play to put them at ease.
- Inspect the ears: Carefully examine your pet’s ears for any signs of redness, swelling, discharge, or foul odor. If you notice any abnormalities, consult your veterinarian before proceeding with cleaning.
- Apply the cleaning solution: Follow the instructions on the ear cleaning solution bottle. Generally, you’ll need to hold the bottle upright and gently squeeze a small amount of the solution into your pet’s ear canal.
- Massage the base of the ear: With the ear flap held up, gently massage the base for about 20-30 seconds. This helps distribute the cleaning solution and loosens any debris or wax inside the ear.
- Let your pet shake: After massaging, allow them to shake their head. This helps to dislodge the loosened debris and allows it to come to the surface.
